About East Midlands Airport

East Midlands airport started life with the basic requirements of 5,850ft runway, 60ft taxiway, new hangar floor and aprons and parking for 850 cars. Financially it was not an instant success, but with increasing freight traffic development of a freight depot was built and both the runway and terminal extended in 1970.

In 1985 a million passengers passed through East Midlands airport for the first time and a £3 million terminal extension was opened by Princess Anne a year later. The airport became a private limited company in 1987 following Government legislation and in 1993 became the first major regional airport to enter the private sector. The airport was brought by the National Express Group for £24.3 million. During the 8 years the group owned the airport thy invested a further £77 million in the airport infrastructure and passenger facilities, these included a £20 million runway extension which opened up opportunities for long-haul flights and £3.5 million was invested in the air control tower, the second highest in the country.

In April 2000, international parcel courier DHL unveiled a new £35 million purpose-built facility on the Airport site, they were soon followed by TNT and UPS. Royal Mail also has one of it's primary hubs at the airport.

Later in 2000 the National Express Group sold East Midlands Airport along with it's sister Bournemouth International to the Manchester Airport Group for £241 million. Since then passengers figures in 2001 rised to 2.38 million and low cost operators Go and bmibaby commenced operations from East Midlands Airport.
